Throughout Australia there is a growing development of private, non-NBN Fixed Wireless internet providers, who operate their own independent wireless internet service networks throughout Australia known as Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs).

The following map contains information about WISPs, not about the NBN Fixed Wireless coverage, or the Retail Service Providers (RSP) utilising the NBN network. However some of the WISPs listed below may also sell nbn services.

Note: This map is intended only as a guide as to WISPs that may be available in your area, and is not intended to show precise coverage information. Please refer to the website or contact details of any WISP linked on the map to determine if they can service your premises.

How does non-nbn® Fixed Wireless work?

  • A WISP Fixed Wireless connection works basically the same way as an nbn® Fixed Wireless signal. However, the signal comes from a private service provider’s tower rather than a nbn® one.

    Here’s how it works:

    1. The internet signal is transmitted from the provider’s base tower to an antenna on your roof. You will need to have a clear line of sight (LoS) to the wireless tower to access its service.
    2. The antenna connects to a connection box where the antenna cable enters your premises.
    3. It then communicates with your indoor modem, which routes the internet to all your devices (laptop, desktop, phone, desktop, weather station, and so on).

    The connection box and modem both require power to operate. Obstacles like trees, buildings, or hilly terrain can weaken your signal if they block the tower’s view.

    Your actual required distance might be shorter due to local conditions – your service provider can help with this, and consider different ways to mount your antennas and other equipment using alternative masts, poles and locations.

It’s the dependable backbone of the network — fast, flexible and available across a wide coverage area.

Best for: everyday homes and businesses wanting a strong, reliable connection.

6 GHz — More room, more speed

One of the newest and most exciting additions to fixed wireless. This band opens up a large amount of fresh, un-congested airspace with much wider channels, which translates directly into faster connections for you. Intelligent frequency coordination keeps it clear and interference-free, so you get the benefit of high speeds on a clean, modern band.

26 GHz & 28 GHz — Fiber-like speeds, delivered over the air
